Poison
2020-2024
Recently it occurred to me that there was an overlooked, obvious thread in the themes behind my work. Marie Curie discovered and worked with the toxic element Radium, the Radium Girls factory workers were poisoned by the radium-laced paint they used, and there was poison in the stories of the accused witch, Mary Bliss Parsons, and of Saints Crispin and Crispian. All of the other themes I have worked on have some connection to poison. My current work focuses on this with intention. The Poison series includes female protagonists who were associated with, accused, or convicted of poisoning. They are juxtaposed with a backdrop dually inspired by William Morris, (a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement and owner of the largest copper mine that produced arsenic as a by-product.) arsenic-impregnated wallpaper and from visits to the Smith College Botanic Garden, (also filled with poisonous plants!)
